Gareth with National Gas

Gareth became interested in vintage engines when we found a 1920 National Gas open crank engine, complete but dismantled and covered with dust and chicken droppings, in a farm shed. Gareth was 13 at the time.

I helped bring the pieces home and he, unaided by me, reassembled it and got it running. He ended up with about 12 different engines and became the youngest member of the South African Vintage Tractor and Engine Club. On one of our Lesotho trips, he found a damaged twin-cylinder Lister engine in an old shed, negotiated a price with the owner and we brought it home on the back of the old Land Cruiser.
